His Excellency the Most Reverend Joseph Francis Rummel, S.T.D, was the ninth Archbishop of New Orleans. Throughout his administration the church made significant advances in growth, in spiritual advancement, and in lay events throughout Southeastern Louisiana, which encompasses the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Due to His Excellency’s promotion of several lay organizations to conduct an assortment of religious events, he came to be known as the “Archbishop of Catholic Action.”
While leading the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Archbishop Rummel supported numerous functions that were attended by thousands of people, including religious assemblies, conventions, and demonstrations. His Excellency also gave much of his time to the nation’s war effort through patriotic radio addresses. Even after the war, he was often asked to lecture at public assemblies and continued to give radio addresses available to the general public. These addresses and sermons make up the bulk of the collection available for viewing within this finding aid.
